Walter L. Slayback

1900-1986

Walter Slayback was born on 5 Mar 1900 in Belleview, Boone County, Kentucky. He was the son of John Edward Slayback 1874-1921 and Mary M. Briggs. Walter married Evelyn Elisabeth Kohus 1909-1978. He was her second husband. Evelyn's first husband, Harley Eubanks 1902-1930. Harley died tragically in an automobile accident on 25 Mar 1930 (#1174). Walter had a child by his previous marriage to Mary Ellen Baker 1904-1929. Her name was M. Ruth Baker. Evelyn Kohus and Walter had no children together. The occupation I have for Walter, on the 1930 census was an elevator operator at a milling company. On his obituary it says he retired as a press operator at Alton Packaging. His wife Evelyn worked for some time at Seagram Distillery located in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. They lived their married lived in Aurora, Dearborn County, Indiana. Walter had five brothers and sisters that I can name: Claud Earl 1903-1979, Charles, Addie, Raymond Sheldon 1910-1947 and Mary. Walter's brother Claud Earl Slayback married Julia Alma Kohus 1905-1984, Evelyn's step sister. Julia Alma was the child of Evelyn's father, Herbert B Kohus Sr 1886-1969 and Lizzie B. LaFever 1888-1905. Walter died on 4 Jan 1986.

OBITUARY WALTER SLAYBACK Funeral services for Walter Slayback, 85, Harborview Apartments, Aurora, were Tuesday, January 7, [1986] at Rullman Funeral Home with burial in Riverview Cemetery. Mr. Slayback, a retired press operator at Alton Packaging, died Saturday, January 4, at Dearborn County Hospital. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Fleming, Cincinnati, and nieces and nephews. The photograph was taken in front of Herbert and Mabel's home on Floyd Place in Mt. Repose, Clermont County, Ohio. The house no longer exists. It stood at the coroner of Floyd Place and State Route 28. The house was torn down to make way for businesses.

This photo was taken in Indiana. Deborah Shannon, the small child above, held by her g grandfather Herbert Kohus, is the daughter of Mary Lou Slayback and Robert F. Shannon. Mary Lou Slayback is the daughter of Claud Slayback and Julia Alma Kohus. Julia Alma Kohus was the daughter of Herbert Kohus Sr. shown above and his first wife Lizzie LaFever. Walter Slayback died on 4 Jan 1986 in Aurora, Dearborn Co., Indiana. He is buried in Riverview Cemetery, Aurora, Indiana. His wife Evelyn (Kohus) Slayback  who died 12 Aug 1978 is also buried there.
