
Rachel Holben was born
in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, 29 Sep.1796. She was the daughter of Christian
Holben 1774-1885 and Maria Bachman 1776-, of Pennsylvania. Rachel married
Valentine Mihm
1799-1861, a shoemaker from Lehigh
County, Pennsylvania. Their first two children Mary and David were born in
Pennsylvania. Sometime between 1824 and 1830 Valentine and Rachel relocated to Seneca County, New York. Nwe York is where the remainder of their children were
born, John, Sophia, Catherine and Lavina. In a deposition given by their son
John Henry Mihm in order to procure his Civil War pension he stated that they
lived about a half mile north of Waterloo

(#1033a). Rachel and Valentine again relocated,
sometime between 1839 and 1850, to Spencer, Medina County, Ohio. When the 1860
census was taken they had migrated to Van Wert
County, Liberty Township, Ohio.
Rachel (Holben) Mihm and Valentine Mihm had
six children, Mary Polly

1832-1922, John Henry 1829-1891, a Civil War Veteran who married Malissa Dague

1835-1918 who married Amasa King
1832-1870, a Civil War Veteran
and Lavina
1839-1922 who married Andrew Mitchell King
1834-1918. Valentine died on 8 Sep 1861 in Van Wert County, Ohio. Rachel moved
in with her oldest daughter Mary after Valentine's death and lived with them at
least through the 1880 census and probably the rest of her life.
In 1890 Rachel's son John Henry Mihm was granted a pension of $6.00 per month
for his military service during the Civil War. After John's death in 1891 Rachel
applied for his pension
(#1034). She died before it was granted. Rachel (Holben) Mihm died on
29 Aug 1892 in Rockford, Mercer County. Ohio. She and Valentine are
buried in
Ridge (Slater) Cemetery, Van Wert County, Ohio.
