Johann Hermann Kohues
aka (John Herman Kohus)
1828-1875
|
|
Johann Hermann
Kohues, was born in Ostbevern, Westfalen, Prussia on 19 Sep 1828
(#156). He
was the son
of Johann Henricus Kohues 1799-1846 and
Anna Maria Gertrud Piegelbrock 1797-1873.
Johann Hermann Kohues Americanized his name to John Kohus upon entering the
United States. John
was a tailor by trade. He was the first of three brothers to emigrate to
Cincinnati, Ohio. His brothers were
Hermann Heinrich Kohues 1826-1900 (shoemaker) and
Johan Heinrich Kohues
1838-1913 (merchant tailor). John married Maria Veronica Determann 1833-1913,
in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati, on 24 Jul 1855 at the St. Philomenna
Catholic Church. The church still stands there today. That area of town was inhabited predominately by German
emigrants. John and Veronica
had eleven children, several of which died at an early age. John Kohus died in Cincinnati on 24 Oct 1875 from Bright's
Disease (a kidney disease). He is buried in St. John Cemetery in St. Bernard, a
suburb of Cincinnati. This
marker bears his name and the names of several of his children. John lived
forty seven years, one month and five days. John's obituary appeared in Der Deutsche Pioniere, a
monthly magazine published by the Deutsche Pionier-Verein (Union of German
Pioneers) in Cincinnati during the period 1869-1885. The individual publications
have since been bound into volumes and preserved. There was an exclusive
membership rule that required an emigrant to have lived in the United States for
at least twenty years before becoming a member. John became a member in November 1874 just
thirteen
month before his death.

Passport application for John H.
Kohus 6 Feb 1865.
The following was
copied, for ease of reading, from the front page of the passport application on the left. Though I do not have a photo of
my great great grandfather, the following passport application gives a very good
description of him. It also shows that John H Kohus did sign an oath of
allegiance to become a US citizen.
