
Herman Heinrich
Kohues was born 31 Dec 1826 in Ostbevern, Westfalen, Prussia. Ostbevern

(#126). He was the son of Johann Henricus Kohues
1799-1846 and
Anna Maria Gertrud Piegelbrock 1797-1873. Hermann learned the
trade of shoemaker in his native land. He lived on a family farm at Dorfbauerschaft 62, in Ostbevern. He left home on 12 Sep 1852 and traveled
by way of Glandorf through Bremen then on to the U.S. arriving at the port in New
Orleans on 29, Nov. 1852. Herman sailed from Bremen to New Orleans on the ship Uhland. The Uhland was a 3
masked, square rigged sailing ship launched on 23
September 1847. Hermann was one of 3 brothers to immigrate to America in the mid
19th century. They all
settled in Cincinnati, Ohio and started their own businesses. Hermann Heinrich Kohues Americanized his name to
Herman Kohus after arriving in America. He signed his declaration for
citizenship on 5 June 1854. Herman married a Prussian emigrant named
Elizabeth Mielenbrink
1ir marriage is listed in the restored marriage index of Cincinnati
(#151). The original records were destroyed in
the Cincinnati riots which occurring from March 28 through March 30, 1884 at
which time the courthouse was burned. Citizens were later asked to come before
the court voluntarily and reestablish their records such as marriages and wills.
Herman and
Elizabeth had 7 children, Veronica 1860-1947, Bernard 1862-1937, Louis 1865-1888, Minnie
1869-1930, Louisa 1875-1947, Emma 1877-1940 and
Clara 1888-. Herman applied his trade as a shoemaker in Cincinnati while both his
brothers
Joann Heinrich
1838-1913 and
John Herman
1828-1975 were Tailors. Herman and wife Elizabeth
were living at 1703 Western Avenue at the time of his death on 30 May 1900.
Herman Kohus is buried in Old St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati, Hamilton County,
Ohio. Elizabeth Mielenbrink died in Nov 1907 and is also buried
