Bernard Heinrich Kohues (Kohus)
1865-1921
|
|
Bernard
Heinrich Kohues/Henry B. Kohus was born in Ostbevern, Prussia, on 14 Nov 1865. He was born out
of wedlock to
Joann Heinrich Kohues 1838-1913 and
Anna Gertrud Fromme
1844-1909.
On his birth record from St. Ambrosus Church books in Ostbevern, his godfather was
Bernard Kohues. That's Bernard Heinrich's uncle. Bernard Heinrich emigrated to America
with his mother Anna Gertrude Fromme in 1867. His father Joan Heinrich Kohus,
immigration 1865, was the third of
three Kohues brothers to come from Ostbevern, Prussia to Cincinnati, Ohio. They
settled in Cincinnati where Anna Gertrude Fromme and Joan Heinrich Kohues were married on 23
Jul 1867 at St. Paul Church. I believe that Joan Heinrich was
Bernard Heinrich's biological father. As was the custom, Bernard's father, Joan Heinrich Kohues Americanized his name to Henry Kohus while his son Bernard Heinrich Kohues
became known as Henry Bernard Kohus. Henry B. became an American Citizen in 1896.
To my knowledge, Henry B. never married.
Henry B.'s father ran a successful
merchant tailoring business in Cincinnati. He was a business partner of George
Drees for years, until about 1890 when he went into partnership with his son
Henry B. Their business was named Kohus & Son. They were in business as Kohus &
Son until 1906 when Henry B. apparently took over the business, naming it H. B.
Kohus and Company. His father Henry was still working at the business location
at 431 Main Street but at age 68 he was listed in the city directory as an
office worker. Henry and his father worked in those capacities until 1913 when
Henry's father died. Henry B. left the business some time before 1916 when he
became manager at the Price Hill Branch of the Provident Savings Bank and Trust
Company. He worked for that company until his death on 11 Apr 1921. Henry B. is
buried in Calvary Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio, in a section along with his father
and several other family members. Birth record St Ambrosius Church 1865 (#195)
Death certificate
(#350)
