Anna Maria Gertrud Piegelbrock

1797-1873

Anna Maria Gertrud Piegelbrock was born in Ostbevern, prince episcopate of Münster, Holy Roman Empire on 21 Feb 1797 (later Prussia then Germany). She was christened at the St Ambrosias Catholic Church in Ostbevern (#407). Her parents were Georg Heinrich Piegelbrock 1750-1803 and Anna Maria Ovelgonne 1764-1841, both from Ostbevern. Anna Maria Gertrude had five siblings: Maria Christina 1795-, Henrich Wilhelm 1798-1799, Joannes Henricus 1799-1804, Stephanus Antonius 1801-1804 and Maria Anna Catharina 1802-.

Anna married Johann Henricus Kohues 1799-1846 on 12 Apr 1825 at the St Ambrosias Church in Ostbevern (#148). They had six children: Bernard 1825-1885, Hermann Heinrich 1826-1900, Johann Hermann 1828-1875, Maria Anna 1832-1898, Anna Maria Elisabeth 1835-1910 and Johan Heinrich Kohues 1838-1913. Three of her children immigrated to the United States of America in the mid 19th century. They were in order of immigration: Johann Hermann 1828-1875 a tailor, Hermann Heinrich 1826-1900 a shoe maker and Johan Heinrich Kohues 1838-1913 a tailor. They all migrated to Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio where they settled and worked the remainder of their lives. Each one opened their own business.

Each brother changed the spelling of his surname from Kohues to Kohus after immigration. All of the Kohus family I have researched that are living in or around Cincinnati, Ohio today and many is the US (not all) can trace their lines back to Germany through one of these three men. Bernard Kohues the oldest male child stayed in Germany and married Catherina Elisabeth Toppheide 1829-1907. As was the custom then the oldest male inherited the farm. Gertrude's youngest daughter, Anna Maria Elisabeth Kohues married Johann Henrich Anton Riesenbeck 1823-1896. At this time I do not know who Gertrude's oldest daughter Maria Anna Kohues married.

I have no photographs of Anna Maria Gertrude Piegelbrock or her husband Johann Henricus Kohues. Anna Maria died on 10 Nov 1873 (death record from St Ambrosias Church books (#237) ). Below are some photos of the farm houses where both Anna Maria Gertrude Piegelbrocks and Johann Henricus Kohues families lived. These photos were taken about 1998. A Piegelbrock ancestor still lived on this farm at that time and the last to live in the Kohues house was Bernard Kohues who had recently died. The Kohues house was being rented out. These farms adjoin each other. The Kohues farm is on Dorfbauerschaft 62, Ostbevern. Thanks to Nina Kohues of Ostbevern for sending these photos. Before the death of Gertrude Piegelbrock she entered into a contract with her children in exchange for a few favors. Below is a translated copy of that contract.

The following agreement is quoted exactly

In Ostbevern on the 8th October 1860

The following people attended the court session today

 1) Gertrude geb. Piegelbrock, the widow of the cottager [Koetter] Heinrich Kohues, from this parish

 2) Her son Bernard Kohues,

 3) Her daughter  Elisabeth Kohues, married name  Riesenbeck, all from this parish. They were recognised, and all were fit to testify. They asked for a contract to be accepted, which is recorded next in this document. Because she can not write, the widow Kohues was assisted by  the actuary Herr Hanning.

(1)

The widow Kohues passes on to her son Bernard Kohues her cottage in this parish, Sub No, Cat 62 [in the ground book] and the pieces of land listed in the following extract from the ground book, which they already own. Also she gives him all the cottage's livestock, farm implements, household furniture, beds, linen and other household goods, which need not be listed in detail.

(2)

Bernard Kohues accepts this transfer of property, and takes over his mother's debts, which are about 200 Thaler, and which are known to him.

(3)

Further, He promises to provide his mother with all her needs in this cottage, without payment, whether she is healthy or sick, for all the days of her life. Also to give her weekly pocket-money of two silver Groschen and six pennies, and to give her yearly thirty pounds of soft hemp. It is agreed that whatever remains when his mother dies will be cancelled. If the mother moves away from her son, then instead of caring for her in kind and giving her pocket money, she will be given twenty Thaler each year, and the bed which she now uses.

(4)

Bernard Kohues pledges to pay off each of his four siblings,

a.Johann,

b.Hermann,

c.Maria Anna,

d.Heinrich

with 30 Taler out of the parental heirloom. The siblings may get the money after coming of age or if they start a business of their own. Maria Anna and Heinrich are additionally entitled to a new shirt and free mending each year , as long as they have not yet got their part of the heirloom, also free access and right of moving about the parental house, also free food when they are ill.

 (5)

As a reassurance for the rights given to the mother, Bernard Kohues puts a mortgage on the property he had got. However, the mother had not called for the 'installation' of a mortgage even though she had been told that without the 'installation' of a mortgage she could only get her rights concerning the "Mitcomparenten" [could not translate this word??] and their heirs, but not a possible buyer of the property.

 (6)

Elisabeth Kohues joined the contract and waived all her claims to parts of the parental heirloom in favor of her brother Bernard, declaring herself fully paid off. Now it was proposed that a copy of the contract should be made for Bernard Kohues, who covered the costs. He wanted as yet to leave open for himself the possibility of transferring the title. Read out aloud, declared to be fine, signed/ marked XXX by the widow Kohues
