Adeline Dunham

Adeline Dunham was born in Ohio in May 1832, the daughter of Huxford Dunham abt.1798-, from Massachusetts, and Sarah "Sally" D. Jedkins from Main. Her parents were married in Cincinnati on 17 Apr 1820. Adeline married John Hutchison, a farm worker from Ohio, on 14 Feb 1847 (#2230). They lived near Madisonville in Hamilton County, Columbus Township, Ohio.  Adeline Dunham's family can be traced back to John Dunham a 1588-1668/69 and Abigail Balliou. Pilgrims living in Plymouth Colony and beyond. Her grandparents Jonathan Dunham b.1775; and Susanna Marchant, migrated to Ohio from Edgertown, Dukes County, Massachusetts, along with seven other families,  in April, 1814. They together they founded "Yankee Settlement" near Amelia, in Clermont County, Ohio. The town is presently named Hamlet.

 

Adeline's family moved from Clermont County, Ohio to Jefferson County, Indiana between 1835 and 1837. Adeline returned to Ohio sometime after 1840 and settled in Madisonville, Hamilton County where she married her husband John Hutchison. Adeline's parents, Husiford Dunham, Sally (Jedkins) Dunham along with her uncle James Dunham were members of Neals Creek anti slavery society in Jefferson County, Lancaster Township, Indiana. On 5 Jan 1839, an anti slavery society was formed at Neals Creek It was led by an abolitionist named Rev. Louis Hicklin of the Methodist Church. There were 82 charter members, 32 of which were women. Forty meetings were held before the group disbanded in 1845.
