Nancy Jane Calhoun
was born on 19 May 1842 in Breathitt County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of
James Calhoun and Mary "Polly" Hogg. About 1860 Nancy
Calhoun married Jacob Weddington Hargis
1828-1915. Jacob was a farmer by trade and a veteran of the American
Civil War on the side of the Confederacy. Nancy and Jacob relocated to Rowan County, Kentucky
between 1860 and 1870 where
they farmed and raised their family. Nancy died on 25 May 1919 and was
buried in the Hargis Family Cemetery. When the Licking River dam was built
creating Cave Run Lake, the Hargis Cemetery was relocated to Alfrey Cemetery, a
composit of several family cemeteries moved to one location. Jacob Hargis is
also buried in Alfrey Cemetery.
