Eliza A. Hargis

1837-1919

Eliza Hargis was the daughter of John Louis Hargis 1802-1886 and Elizabeth Weddington 1805-1843. She was born on 4 Nov 1837 in Pike County, Kentucky. Her family later relocated in Breathitt County where she married Captain William Strong on 21 Feb 1853. Together they had at least 9 children. Her husband Capt William "Bill" Strong led a very colorful life in which he served during the Civil War in the  Kentucky Cavalry on the side of the union. Later he served in the Kentucky State Troopers and was a member of the "Red String", an organization which opposed the KKK.  He was killed from ambush by John Akemon and others on May 9, 1897 on Lick Branch of the Saldee, Breathitt County, Kentucky. Eliza (Hargis) Strong died on 7 Jun 1919 in Jackson, Breathitt County, Kentucky. She is buried in the Turner-Strong Cemetery, Little, Breathitt County, Kentucky.

From a photo published in The Jackson Times in 1972, Eliza (Hargis) Strong, shows the widow of Captain Bill Strong, with two of her grandchildren: Clarence and Edward Strong. This photo was taken in 1897, probably just after Captain Bill's death on May 9th.
