Sarah Elisabeth Pelfrey and her husband Alfred Hardin. Sarah Elisabeth Pelfrey
was the daughter of Louisa Hargis and Beverly Pelfrey. Sarah and
Alfred tragically lost their son James William Hardin on 11 June 1929 when
he was shot over a boundary line dispute. It is said that James William Hardin,
"Willie," was shot by his uncle Jacob Pelfrey ,"Jake," while mistaking him for
his father Alfred Hardin. It is said that Willie was wearing a new straw hat
similar to the one his father always wore and was shot by mistake. Family
stories say that some of the Hardin family were living with the Hargis family at
the time. Jake Hargis 1912-1960 was so upset over the shooting that he changed his name
from Jake to Jack so no one would mistake him for Jake Pelfrey and try to take
revenge on him. Jack
Hargis used that name the rest of his life.
