Archibald Callaway Cope

Archibald Callaway Cope was born on 10 May 1828 in Breathitt County, Kentucky. Archibald C. Cope married Sabina Hargis 1831-1858 from Pike County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of John Louis Hargis 1802-1886 and Elizabeth Weddington 1805-1843. Archibald and Sabrina made their home in Breathitt County, Kentucky. Sabina Hargis Cope died on 24 May 1858 after giving birth to their daughter Sabina who lived only 43 days. Both Sabrina and daughter Sabrina are listed on the Breathitt County, death records (#324).  Archibald Cope died on 8 Nov 1907. He and wife Sabina, as well as several of their children, are buried in the Cope Family Cemetery near Jackson, Breathitt County, Kentucky.

 

OBITUARY: The Breathitt County News, November 8, 1907-  "Death Claims A. C. Cope. Captain A.C. Cope died at his home on Frozen Creek November 8. He was born May 10, 1828, and would have been 80 years of age at his next birthday. He served four years in the Confederate army as Captain in Co. D 5th Kentucky and was in the battle of Chickamauga and several other battles, but escaped without receiving a wound. He was elected to the legislature from this district and served in the session of 1877-1878 with credit to himself and his constituents. He has been an invalid for many years and bore up under his afflictions with great courage and fortitude. He was one of our best citizens and his loss will be greatly felt by the people of his community. He was buried by the Masons, of which order he had been a consistent member for many years."
