Michael Clouse

1789-1867

 

 

Michael Clouse was born on 25 Mar 1789 in Alsace, Germany. He married Anna Mariah Bonewitz 1784-1872. She was the daughter of Jacob Bonewitz 1761-1818 and Maria Eva Rosanna Specht 1749-1822. Here is a transcript from the Jacobs Lutheran Church, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, baptismal recording for the birth of four of their children, (Solomon, I believe this to be Sarah 1812-1882, not Solomon), Simon 1815-1899, John George 1816-1859 and Susannah 1818-, (#158A). The other children I can name are Michael D. 1823-1856, Jacob 1825-1854, Mary 1827-1905 and Eliza.

 

In1819 Michael Clouse purchased land in the SW quarter of Section 20 in Township 21 range 14. (#161). In the History of Ashland County, Ohio, under the Bio. for Simon Clouse son of Michael Clouse, it says that his family moved to Wayne County, Ohio about 1820 (#157). Here is Michael Clouse on the Wayne County Census in 1823 (#2019b). Michael is on the personal property tax record, Wayne County in 1831 (#2197). In 1834 Michael Clouse purchased more land from Walter Elgin and his wife Sarah for two hundred dollars. It was also in Wayne County, Congress Township. The description of the land was part of the SW corner of the SE corner section 20, Township 21, range 14 (G) (H) ( I ). In Stark County, Ohio,1837, Michael Clouse made his declaration to become an American Citizen (#1150). Michael Clouse on the 1840 US Census (#1022). In 1844 Michael purchases land from John and Rebecca Pershin. It was the SE quarter of section 19, township 21, range 14 (C)  (D)  (E). Michael and family on the 1850 US Census (#1091). Living very near them is Solomon Bonewitz, brother of Michael's wife Anna Bonewitz. In1852 Michael bought land from Robert & Martha Anderson (#2193a) (#2193b) (#2193c) Personal property tax record, Wayne County, Ohio,1854 (#2196) Michael appears for a final time on the 1860 US Census (#1089)

 

Michael Clouse died on 13 Oct 1867, in Wayne County, Congress Township, Ohio. His wife Anna Mariah (Bonewitz) Clouse died almost five years later on 18 Jul 1872 in West Salem, Wayne County, Congress Township, Ohio. They are both buried in Rickel Cemetery, Ashland County, Ohio. In 1872 after Anna Mariah died an add was placed in the newspaper to sell the property of Michael Clouse (#2198a)  (#2198b).
